The Family Health Center at Daytona Beach is modeled after a private family practice office with 12,000 square feet of floor space. The clinical wings house 17 exam rooms, one dietitian counseling room, an office lab, two procedural/treatment rooms and a family counseling room. The resident/faculty consultation room has current reference resources for case discussions and a network computer terminal. Easy access to the medical center's radiology and laboratory departments promotes rapid turnaround for acute services during office hours. The HMC Family Health Center's location, adjacent to the hospital, enables residents to see patients on short notice if needed, minimizing interference with inpatient duties. Faculty offices are centrally located in the administrative wing to encourage accessibility. Also located here are a conference room and a resident's lounge, which contains network computer terminals. When not seeing patients, camaraderie is enhanced by the nearby and spacious on-call lounge. This lounge has network computer terminals which are on-line with the hospital and facilitate laboratory information retrieval. The residents also maintain their own lounge library for on-call use.
A satellite Family Health Center in nearby Port Orange, featuring state-of-the-art facilities, complements our ambulatory training. During the first year, the resident spends one half-day per week in the HMC Family Health
Center. By the end of that year the ideal patient load will be approximately 40 families. The second and third-year residents spend a minimum of two and four half-days, respectively, per week in the Family Health Centers. The
average buildup of a resident's practice usually approaches 250 families by the end of three years. A faculty member is always present for consultation with the residents and assistance with procedures. The Family Health
Centers are fully computerized and residents are instructed in computer use in practice. Each resident receives an individualized address on our local area computer network which allows him/her to send and receive e-mail and
access many popular applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheet, graphic programs and Medline. In addition, each resident receives a palmtop computer with 64MB storage memory and medical databases. We are
continuously adding to our electronic library, which currently includes Scientific American Medicine on CD-ROM, Pediatrics in Review and Family Practice/Internal Medicine databases. We also have an programatic license for
MDConsult an internet based medical library.
