OBSTETRICS / GYNECOLOGY At the very basic of a family practice is attendance at the birth of a new family member. In obstetrics, didactic and clinical experience is provided in routine and high-risk prenatal care. pre- and postnatal nutritional, teenage pregnancy and genetic counseling are other aspects of the residency program's educational experience. The skills of obstetrical delivery, obstetrical anesthesia and management of the various complications of labor are covered extensively. Gynecology training focuses on performing periodic GYN (well-woman) examination, utilizing various birth control methods, dealing with ramifications of abnormal Pap smears and other common office problems. In additions, developing ease with marital and sexual history-taking is considered an important part of a family doctor's skills.

Formal rotations through the OB/GYN service are scheduled for approximately four months for the first two years, with opportunities available for additional elective work in the third year. In addition, senior residents do an Ambulatory GYN rotation. The first-year resident admits, manages and delivers obstetrical patients under the supervision of the Family Practice OB/GYN physicians. The first-year resident also participates in various operative procedures, becomes familiar with various obstetrical diagnostic procedures and learns pre- and postoperative patient management. The second year resident refines skills further and eventually builds up a case load of experiences which will qualify him or her for obstetrical privileges after graduation. The resident will participate in a wide variety of gynecologic, surgical and diagnostic procedures, in addition to outpatient gynecology and family planning counseling.

Ambulatory OB care is provided at the Family Health Center and Volusia County Public Health Unit, and private physician's offices.. Ambulatory GYN training includes extensive procedural experiences in colposcopy, endometrial biopsy, LEEP, IUD insertion, breast cyst aspiration, cervical cryosurgery and URO/GYN in the Family Health Center. A state-of-the-art video colposcopy system is in use at the Family Health Center.
