The HMC FPRP values diversity in the education and training of our residents. In keeping with our commitment to graduate exceptionally qualified, well-rounded physicians, we feel that exposure to and training in multicultural issues is very important Cultural diversity issues are addressed in our residency program primarily by way of the noon conferences series entitled "Understanding and Celebrating Diversity: Perspectives on Human Diversity in the Practice of Medicine". These conferences provide training experiences that explore cultural and human diversity, the influence of cultural factors on medical beliefs and practices, and the effects of personal cultural background on staff relationships and physician-patient interactions. Several of our residents have completed international electives in different parts of the world, including Kenya, Guatemala and Russia. Our community medicine elective also provides residents the opportunity to do outreach with various groups in our area In our efforts to continue to develop these aspects of our program, we would like to welcome any prospective residents who have interests in these areas to consider applying. We seek to have a diverse staff who can work together, learn from each other, and make positive contributions to the field of medicine. Minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply. If you would like to speak to someone about any of these issues, please contact Dr. Kathryn Fraser (Behavioral Science Faculty) at (904)254-4171, kathryn.fraser@hmc.halifax.org
